Observing “Social Distancing” guidelines doesn’t have to mean being socially disconnected. The Colorado Center for the Blind FAST program will therefore host a virtual get-together every other Friday evening at 7:00 PM., starting April 24.

April 24: We have all been doing school and work online for weeks now. Some of it is going okay, but there are also real barriers for blind students in the virtual classroom. In light of this ever-changing virtual learning landscape our blind and visually impaired students face due to the pandemic, the Colorado Center for the Blind want to know how this is affecting blind and visually impaired students and to see if there are resources we can offer. We know that by now, most if not all of your school districts have made the difficult decision that in-person classes will not return the remainder of this school year. The Colorado Center for the Blind, the National Federation of the Blind of Colorado and the National Federation of the Blind stand together in supporting your educational and extracurricular needs.

Here are a couple of resources to get started with:

Oh, and we’ll definitely include some fun and “social” activities too!

For additional information or to receive the Zoom Meeting link/phone number, please contact Martin Becerra-Miranda by emailing mbecerra@cocenter.org

Be safe, be kind and be fair,
Martin Becerra-Miranda
Director of Youth Services

Observing “Social Distancing” guidelines doesn’t have to mean
Besides your dog or cat loving that you are always home, what could be good about not hanging with friends in person or even going to school for over a month?

One positive thing that has come from the stay at home order has been the innovative ways that we are all finding to work, play, and keep in touch with each other. Join us this coming Friday, May 8, 2020 at 7 PM to learn about some of the technology we are all using. From mobile apps to connect with each other, to those we use for work/school, and even those we use for gaming. Have a favorite piece of technology, or a favorite app that you'd like to share with us? We'll have time for that as well.

For questions or to receive the link to the Zoom meeting, email Martin Becerra-Miranda at mbecerra@cocenter.org

And get social with us on May 8!

For those of you who received the link previously, we will be using the same call-in/log-in information.

7:00 pm: Fun Activities & Skills Training (FAST) Game Night!

May 23, 2020

It has been a lot of fun getting to connect with those of you who have participated in our bi-weekly FAST Zoom meetings. This time around we are moving our meeting to Thursday night at 7 PM. During the first couple of sessions we have discussed many aspects of virtual/distance learning such as accessing materials, navigating google classroom, socializing with peers, finding accessible games, and of course working with various types of devices (and even troubleshooting some issues during the meeting). This upcoming Thursday we will be having a game night lead by our very own Access Technology instructor Brett Boyer. We are planning to play a bit of trivia, “Heads Up”, and another game or two.

We will be using the same call in/log in information that we have used during our previous calls.

If you have any questions or for the information, please reach out to Martin Becerra-Miranda via phone at (303)778-1130 extension 223 or via email at mbecerra@cocenter.org

Who? Blind students of all ages and their families What? CCB’s bi-weekly FAST Zoom call When Friday, June 5, 2020 at 7:00 pm MDT Where? We will hold this meeting on the Zoom Meeting platform

Join the Colorado Center for the Blind this upcoming Friday, June 5, 2020 at 7:00 pm MDT for our bi-weekly FAST (Fun Activities and Skills Training) Zoom meeting. Our last meeting was a Game Night; we played a few rounds of “Trivia” and a couple of other rounds of “Heads Up”. Unsurprisingly, everyone who participated did a great job! We weren’t keeping score but the competitive juices were flowing for sure.

This week, we will kick off our meeting with a bit of trivia relating to our topic, which is Pre-Employment Transition Services. Those of you who are currently working with rehabilitation services will likely know what “Pre-ETS” means. For those of you who are not completely sure, you will have to join us to find out what it means and how it applies to you.

Now that it's June 1 and most schools are out, we also want to highlight the “Virtual Summer Sessions” that the Colorado Center for the Blind will be offering starting June 16, 2020. CCB will have 4 different workshops that will cover the following topics: Self-Advocacy; STEM; College Readiness; and Employment. The Self-Advocacy and STEM workshops will consist of two 90-minute sessions each. And the College Readiness and Employment workshops will consist of four 90-minute sessions each.

We will use the same call in/log in information for this call as we’ve used for previous FAST Zoom meetings. If you need the meeting information or have questions regarding our Virtual Summer Sessions, please contact Martin Becerra-Miranda at (303)778-1130 extension 223 or by email at mbecerra@cocenter.org.

2:00 pm: “Self-Advocacy 101”, a 2-part virtual workshop for Youth Ages 13 to 21

June 16, 2020

The goal of Self-Advocacy 101 is to share tools and techniques that will assist students to understand their strengths and weaknesses; identify and understand how blindness impacts them and what adjustments they must make in order to be on an equal footing with sighted peers; and to develop their individual methods for communicating these necessary adjustments in academic, social, home and vocational environments. We know that creativity is at the core of self-advocacy. More times than not advocating for ourselves begins by identifying a challenge we are facing. In an ideal world this is promptly followed by those in charge offering a solution to said challenge. However, as many of our students know all too well, this is not always the case, especially when it comes to the reasonable accommodations necessary for blind students to have access materials and stay on track with their peers.

Items that will be addressed during this 2-part workshop include but are not limited to:

  • What is self-advocacy?
  • What types of challenges require me to advocate for myself?
  • How do I know what my strengths and weaknesses are?
  • How can I use my strengths to help address these challenges?
  • How do I know what I need to address and overcome these challenges?
  • How do I convey what I need for access in an effective manner?
  • Students will observe a variety of self-advocacy scenarios.
  • Students will identify Dos and Don’ts of self-advocacy.
  • Students will participate in self-advocacy role-play situations.
  • Students will find and implement creative solutions to everyday challenges.
  • Students will learn about benefits of self-advocacy, e.g. heightened sense of self-awareness and higher self-confidence.
  • Students will learn about the important role of advocating for legislation to ensure equal access and opportunity.

College Readiness: Whether Virtual or in-Person

The Colorado Center for the Blind presents “College Readiness: Whether Virtual or in-Person”, a 4-part virtual workshop to be held on the dates of June 30, July 2, 7 & 9 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm MDT.

Going to college is a big step for every young person. For most, it means living on your own for the first time in a dorm, picking a major in a subject you feel passionate about and maybe staying up as late as you want. This fall, it may mean more online courses or only online courses in this era of social distancing. For blind students moving from high school to college, it means no more IEP or 504 meetings, no more technology provided by the school and a number of other things. But it also means exciting opportunities, new friends and new adventures to go along with new responsibilities to know your civil rights as a blind student, how to advocate for them effectively and what to do when you do everything right and still things go wrong.

Items that will be addressed during this 4-part workshop include but are not limited to:

  • Didn’t the ADA fix everything? Your civil rights to access and how advocacy, grit and resilience are essential tools for success. And don’t forget help from the National Federation of the Blind, if necessary.
  • Should the Disability Access Office do it, or can you? How to find your own accessible textbooks and other independent strategies.
  • Traveling independently to class, the dining hall, the gym, and the best coffee stands.
  • Is it inaccessible, or is it your tech skills? Some tips and strategies for making the most of the e-learning environment.
  • Who is paying for this? Vocational Rehabilitation, Financial Aid, scholarships and more.
  • So, what kinds of majors can blind people do? Choosing your path based on aptitude and passion, not pathology.

Pre-registration is required.
