When

The Colorado Center for the Blind will be part of Colorado Gives Day on December 9 again in 2025, as we have been each year since its inception. Colorado Gives Day is a statewide movement of giving, where thousands of Coloradans come together to support nonprofits like the Colorado Center for the Blind. Each year, generous donors have grown the contributions that support our programs so that blind Coloradans have the skills and the belief in themselves to live the lives they want.

Side-by-side photos of the building's front taken decades apart. Left shows part of a fenced-in playground at the far left and a YMCA sign on the far right. The right photo shows a new street sign at the left, new sidewalks, a patio with picnic tables, a rose garden and more trees.
Though the Colorado Center for the Blind occupied the building in August, 2000, the Y still used the playground for its summer daycare camp in 2001, just visible in the photo on the left. A project completed in 2018 reconfigured the parking lot and front sidewalks, as well as adding a patio, front garden and additional landscaping to the north of the parking lot.

In 1988, the Colorado Center for the Blind opened its doors at our first location at 2230 South Broadway in Denver. We began our program with five students and three staff members. The Center grew quickly over the first several years, and it soon became evident that we needed more space. In 1993, we purchased another building at 1830 South Acoma, and we ran programs in both buildings for several years. Even with this new building, however, we realized our programs would soon outgrow our available space again. In 1999, we determined that we needed a larger facility and one where all of our programs could be under one roof. So, we began looking for a new home.

Doug, our Museum tour guide talks to the visitors in the Cretaceous room

That was Nick’s joke when he stuck his hand inside the Camarasaurus’s mouth. Nice try, buddy! But it is a great example of just how tactile – and accessible – the whole visit to the Morrison Museum of Natural History was for blind kids on Saturday.

And nobody lost an actual appendage. Instead, it was a fun and tactile time examining and learning about creatures from the Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Ice Ages.
Besides, who doesn’t like dinosaurs? Our February FAST (Fun Activities & Skill Training) program was a meetup at the Morrison Museum of Natural History, our tour guide Doug gave a hands-on tour of the museum’s exhibits.

Colorado Center for the Blind Street Sign

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who supports the work that we do at the Colorado Center for the Blind. For, without your caring, dedication, and support, we would not have been able to do so much in the last year.

We again had our most successful Colorado Gives Day. We continue to be moved and humbled by this generosity that supports our programs. We believe that blind people can do anything, and we are thankful that you believe in us.

Here are some 2024 highlights I would like to share with you:

The Taking Charge Program

In April, six women in our Older Blind program participated in our week-long residential intensive training program. They stayed at our student apartments and took the bus to the center each day. They had classes in cooking, technology, woodshop, cane travel, and Braille.
