The National Federation of the Blind of Colorado and the Colorado Center for the Blind are partnering again for our 2nd 6 Dot Dash 5k, June 29! Our first year was a big success with 191 runners (and/or walkers) and netting more than $5000 for our Braille literacy and scholarship programs. Not bad for the first lap! Besides, it was a lot of fun.

This year is shaping up to be even bigger and better, with more kid activities, local food vendors, live music and more beer, just to name a few of this year’s additions. It’s a great way to spend a mid-summer Saturday morning!

The NFB of Kansas President dropped by for a quick visit and tour this afternoon. Tom Page and his friend Nicole are in the area with Tom’s string band, the Haymakers. They played in Colorado Springs last night and will be in Denver at Cervantes’ Other Side tonight. Though a number of Kansas students have come to CCB for training over the years, this was Tom’s first chance to see the Center.

“The energy is amazing,” he said.

Tom and Nicole bumped into another Kansan this afternoon while visiting. Luther Fuller is part of the Summer for Success (College Prep) Program this summer. He’s just graduated from high school and is off to college in the fall to major in Music and Computer Science on the side.

We’re in our final week – final days, really – of the 2016 year at the Colorado Center for the Blind. It’s not exactly like winding down, but more like an all-cylinders-open surge for the finish line.

Alejandro went on a support drop yesterday, and is cooking a big meal tomorrow. Ryan served his mini-meal – fifteen people and French onion soup – while down in the gym another class punched, kicked and potato-tossed each other on their way to earning their orange belts in Karate from Karate Denver. We also delivered holiday cookies and other holiday treats to Littleton police, fire and planning personnel, as well as to the shopping assistants at the Neighborhood Wal-Mart.

We’ve captured a few strays from the Denver area acoustic roots band Stray Dog: Eric Woods, Zac Cottrell & Anne and Joe Rigley. From numerous original songs, acoustic interpretations of classic rock tunes, 1940’s jazz standards, all the way to bluegrass and blues, they put their own mark on a broad, eclectic mix of music. Eric’s unique touch on the guitar over Joe’s classy bass backs Anne’s remarkably sweet, pure and honest voice, all while riding Zac’s magical percussion on the Cajón.

Audiences consistently remark that the unique hallmark of this group is their ability to make you feel as if you are sitting around the coffee table with them in the basement making music, with as much focus on enjoying the music as playing it.
