World-Renowned Training Center

We believe you can do anything as a blind person. So, every day, we encourage and challenge you—and you come to understand your potential as you build the skills and confidence to live the life you want. Because when you believe in yourself and experience a thriving community of positive blind people, nothing can hold you back from pursuing your dreams.

The Colorado Center for the Blind is located in Littleton, about a dozen miles south of downtown Denver, and proudly affiliated with the National Federation of the Blind. Founded in 1988, the Colorado Center for the Blind has grown into a world-renowned blindness-skills training center attracting students from across the United States and beyond. Nearly all of our instructors are blind, and thus we, too, “walk the walk” every single day…

Side-by-side photos of the building's front taken decades apart. Left shows part of a fenced-in playground at the far left and a YMCA sign on the far right. The right photo shows a new street sign at the left, new sidewalks, a patio with picnic tables, a rose garden and more trees.
Though the Colorado Center for the Blind occupied the building in August, 2000, the Y still used the playground for its summer daycare camp in 2001, just visible in the photo on the left. A project completed in 2018 reconfigured the parking lot and front sidewalks, as well as adding a patio, front garden and additional landscaping to the north of the parking lot.

In 1988, the Colorado Center for the Blind opened its doors at our first location at 2230 South Broadway in Denver. We began our program with five students and three staff members. The Center grew quickly over the first several years, and it soon became evident that we needed more space. In 1993, we purchased another building at 1830 South Acoma, and we ran programs in both buildings for several years. Even with this new building, however, we realized our programs would soon outgrow our available space again. In 1999, we determined that we needed a larger facility and one where all of our programs could be under one roof. So, we began looking for a new home.

Our Programs

Independence Training Program for Adults (ITP)

Our Independence Training Program (ITP) is designed for blind adults (18 years of age and older). Typically students complete the program in six to nine months while residing in nearby McGeorge Mountain Terrace apartments, which are owned by the Center. Participants not only build the skills that they need to be independent, but also focus on gaining confidence and belief in themselves as blind people

All the Learning Isn’t in Class

It’s not all screen readers and street crossings. Just as much learning happens while skiing with Ignite at Eldora, hitting the skid pad with Master Drive, or hanging around by the piano before classes start.
