Watch the video of the July 30 Talent Show finale:
Summer Youth Programs ended July 30 with a student talent show featuring solo singing and duets, Native American flute, songs in Spanish, Mandarin and Thai, as well as lively and funny Emceeing.
The finale of the show – and the summer – was was ‘You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful’ sung by all summer students and staff.
Why this song? Youth Services Director Brent Batron decided it was the theme of the summer after hearing it almost every day for month at 7 a.m. Early-arriving students took advantage of the baby grand piano in our lobby to play and sing before the start of classes. ‘You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful’ was a daily favorite.
Despite the teen-love theme of the lyrics, the title at least resonates with the goals and purpose of our summer programs and Youth Programs in general – to instill in blind youth the belief in themselves and their capacity, and that blindness is respectable.

During the summer of 2014, I participated in the Colorado Center for the Blind ending act singing with close friends that I now consider family, One Direction’s “You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful”. I believe the song despite the teen- love lyrics, was truly the CCB summer song. It defined the quality’s each and everyone of those summer students had. The 8 weeks of hard work and dedication being placed. The improvements and growth that all of the students had. It showed that the students were independent. That they were strong willed and confident that they could accomplish their goals. That when they returned home to their lives with their family’s and friends, their blindness will accompany them to make them stronger. They will go home knowing that the lessons that they were taught will be taken with them. Thank you Colorado Summer staff. You taught us many things… and they are many things we will never forget.
I along with Angel attended CCB over the summer and loved it emencely. When I first arrived I knew that I’d be going there just to learn a few things, a little of this, a little of that. But what I didn’t expect was to learn as much as I did. With the help and support of all of the students and staff, I have grown and learnt much that I will take with me where I go for as long as I live. Not only did I learn much from staff, but also from my fellow students. I learned who I am and what I have to offer. I thank each and every one of you for making this a summer that I will never forget. And I sincerely hope that all of you do know that you’re beautiful.
