World-Renowned Training Center

We believe you can do anything as a blind person. So, every day, we encourage and challenge you—and you come to understand your potential as you build the skills and confidence to live the life you want. Because when you believe in yourself and experience a thriving community of positive blind people, nothing can hold you back from pursuing your dreams.

The Colorado Center for the Blind is located in Littleton, about a dozen miles south of downtown Denver, and proudly affiliated with the National Federation of the Blind. Founded in 1988, the Colorado Center for the Blind has grown into a world-renowned blindness-skills training center attracting students from across the United States and beyond. Nearly all of our instructors are blind, and thus we, too, “walk the walk” every single day…

Latest News Summary

By Dan Burke, 3 December, 2025

When a parent finds out that their child is blind, it can be devastating and easy for them to believe that their child will not be able to be happy or to really experience their life. It’s understandable – how many of us really know first-hand about blindness, or even know a blind person?

At the Colorado Center for the Blind, we work with parents and their kids so that they realize that being blind is not a tragedy at all and that their kids will live rich fulfilling busy lives. The key to this message is our community of confident, successful blind people who believe that blind and low vision kids can do anything with their lives!

In November, we came together with blind youth and their families (and some teachers) for our annual Thanksgiving youth event. We put blind and low vision youth in the kitchen with capable blind role models to do some baking. The blind kids loved deciding if they wanted to bake apple pie or snickerdoodle cookies. One five-year-old loved every minute of this baking time, and she insisted on using the hand mixer.

Our Programs

Independence Training Program for Adults (ITP)

Our Independence Training Program (ITP) is designed for blind adults (18 years of age and older). Typically students complete the program in six to nine months while residing in nearby McGeorge Mountain Terrace apartments, which are owned by the Center. Participants not only build the skills that they need to be independent, but also focus on gaining confidence and belief in themselves as blind people

All the Learning Isn’t in Class

It’s not all screen readers and street crossings. Just as much learning happens while skiing with Ignite at Eldora, hitting the skid pad with Master Drive, or hanging around by the piano before classes start.

Students took advantage of a big snowstorm in late February to work on a snow person at the McGeorge Mountain Terrace Apartments. Some students from warmer states don't get this chance at home.
